WMDs

So the hunt for weapons of mass destruction is officially over. And, uh, we didn't find any.

The justification for invading Iraq was essentially baseless. That means we've spent two years at war, suffered the loss of almost 1500 American soldiers with tens of thousands more maimed and scarred, killed unknown thousands of Iraqis, spent hundreds of billions of dollars, left American forces stretched too thin to deal with new crises, distracted ourselves from securing Afghanistan and defeating Al Qaeda, created a power vacuum in Iraq which has led to civil war, empowered nuclear Iran, ruined our international reputation, and assisted in the recruitment of a whole new generation of American-hating jihadists, all because we couldn't give inspections, which were working, a few more months.

Bush has said that, knowing what he knows now, he'd still go into Iraq. Knowing that there were no weapons, totting up the costs and benefits, he'd do it all over again. He would do the same thing.

I really don't know what to say. And the second term hasn't even started yet.

I always thought the Tom Friedman defense of going to war in Iraq was the best one: that it was a major gamble to bring a liberal democracy to the heart of the Middle East; that it was a war of choice, not of necessity. It remains to be seen whether the gamble will pay off in the long-term, though early indications are miserable. My issues with the war have more to do with the execution and the justification than the notion of invasion. The former two factors were botched so badly by Rummy and co. that I campaigned for Kerry. If Bush truly believes that he would still go into Iraq knowing what we know now, he should have made it clear two years ago that he was going in more on the basis of creating a democratic state in the ME than for WMDs.
The bottom line is, by justifying the invasion solely on the basis of WMDs, America's credibility has been diminished nearly beyond repair. For that alone Bush deserved to be canned. His reelection only further reduces America's credibility. Like you needed to be reminded.
